I'm not a regular mystery book reader, but I'm wondering if someone
could recommend an author or some titles with detective/investigator
characters similar in style to Monk and Columbo, i.e. apparently
bumbling, inept people who have a keen logical mind.

Thanks!

Perhaps the Inspector Morse series by Colin Dexter?

Another possibility is Jane Langton's Homer Kelly, although they don't have
that procedural element that Monk and Columbo share.

And, of course, there's always the MONK novel series by Lee Goldberg.
Can't get more similar-in-style to Monk than, well, Monk!

And a lot - but not all - of the Kellys have the Columbo style "the reader
knows who the villain is from the start" thing.

I don't know about Frost, but I don't think there is any pretense of
bumbling in the Hill series.

If you're willing to read about how the other half lives, you might
like Donald Westlake's Dortmunder books. He's an absolutely
brilliant criminal planner whose plans never run as smoothly
as they should.
