(LONG piece about her books)
Excerpt (she was living in Bogota at the time)
...In the Curacao era Siny van Iterson wrote interviews for the Fair and News under the title 'In the searchlight'.
"I have a good example of that. The newspapers wrote negatively about the prison without ever having seen it inside. Then I made an interview with the director and he showed me the whole prison, which was fine. In a barred cage, a man with a large iron ball was sitting on his leg. He was very friendly and I talked to that man for a long time. But later the director told me that this man was a multiple killer.
That man fled and killed two people that night of his flight. When they caught him again, they put that ball on his leg. I used that prisoner for Shadow over Chocamata , but I changed and toned it. Murder and manslaughter is the order of the day in these countries. From another prisoner I got a poem in Dutch: When I look outside, the birds are free and I am sitting here. I put that poem completely in the Fair.
I made interviews with all kinds of people: a cabaret artist, professors who came to visit and also a lion-moon.
That prisoner I was just talking about stumbled two people with a knife; then he went to buy a sandwich that he cut with the same knife. I always say that the truth is far more fantastic than what we can ever come up with together."
