In LJ Braun's "The Cat Who..." books, Qwilleran lives in the small
town of Pickax in Moose county, which is "400 miles north of
everywhere" in the "northeast central United States".

I have always imagined it to be in northern Wisconsin or
Minnesota. but a friend insists that it is in upstate New York.
I don't have the books around to check for clues, and I don't
remember anything more specific than the above phrases.

Where do you place it?

You're not the only one wondering - here's some other opinions.

Sorry, Chris - I meant to send this to the group, not to your email.

It's very clear that it's not upstate New York, which isn't 400 miles north
of everywhere. It matches the Upper Peninsula of Michigan most closely, but
Braun invents what she needs for the stories, so it can't be matched to any
place precisely. In the first few books Qwilleran is in the unnamed city to
the south, a place that seems to be Detroit. Braun lived there for decades
and worked for the Free Press. Wikipedia reports her birth year as 1912,
much earlier than I had realized. It was revealed in a Free Press article
of last year. 94 this year and still going strong. Good for her.

Yep, I agree, I'd always thought it was the UP. I hope I'm still doing
things at 94.
